One of the
region's most remarkable hotels, the Tatong Tavern has gained national
recognition through the released coffee table book.
The work of author David Carr and photographer Ned Meldrum, Counter Meal -
A Slice of Australian Life was launched in Sydney on August 5.
The Tavern is one of 32 Australian hotels featured in the 320-page
publication, which seeks to celebrate top quality meals in congenial and
unique atmospheres.
The spread on the Tudor-style inn includes stories on a few of the
township's many characters, and details the Tavern's remarkable history.
The Tatong Tavern is an English Style Country
Inn situated in the small community of Tatong only 25 kilometres drive from
Benalla. Set in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range it's the perfect
place to stay, we're perfectly positioned to enjoy local activities such as
bushwalking & cycling, fresh water fishing, gem collecting and
sightseeing on the Ned Kelly Trail. http://www.thenedkellytrail.com
The pub remains a focal point of village life
and the plays a significant role in the local community. It is also a
popular stopping point for travellers who are exploring the Great Dividing
Range, local wineries and Ned Kelly history. Many travellers heading south
toward Melbourne and north into the High Country and beyond stay here in
idyllic surroundings.
The Tatong Tavern has spacious grounds and a
delightful beer garden set amongst mature gum trees that ensure shaded seating
during the endless summer sunshine.
Tatong is situated amongst some of the finest
grape growing areas in Victoria and has been a part of the history of this
part of Australia for well over a century. We offer a fine selection of
local wines on our wine list, but if you prefer to sample wines at the
Cellar Door then the Tatong Tavern is close by too many of the region's
most popular wineries.
Tatong is in the heart of Ned Kelly Country,
so if you're on the Ned Kelly Trail, then The Tatong Tavern is the perfect base, we are only a short drive away from the famous
Kelly Tree at Stringy Bark Creek where Ned Kelly, Joe Byrne, Steve Hart
& Dan Kelly became Australia's most wanted outlaws after killing three
police officers.
If it's the adventure of snowboarding or
skiing then you must be on the way to the snowfields. Tatong Tavern has
long been a stopover point for those travellers making their way to the
snowfields of Mount Buffalo and Buller which are a short drive from Tatong,
preferring Old English Inn style bed and breakfast accommodation to the
motels of the local towns of Mansfield and Benalla. Guests are provided
with comfortable and affordable accommodation with double rooms, a family
room and chalet style bungalows available.
Within close proximity is Mount Samaria
National Park with its panoramic vistas; sublime in spring and early summer
when the abundant flora & wildlife are an attraction for bushwalkers,
nature lovers & photographers. There are bbq
& picnic tables and a number of camping areas.
